about

The Maze was written from both personal experiences and collective struggle. Spring 20218- I was on my way to a family member's birthday gathering when I came across a scene of a person who had just been struck by a car. They were ok. Shook up with a clearly broken arm but were conscious and aware of their surroundings. I pulled the car over and my first aid training kicked in after realizing the only other person at the scene was the driver and also in a state of shock from the accident. The person lay there on the pavement, laughing at their relatively minor injury given the speed. While they never uddered the words "I haven't seen you much around the maze," there was shared humanity in that moment rarely felt throughout our days that inspired the lyric. The driver later admitted to being on their phone in an embarrassed and shameful admission to the person they struck. After the ambulance arrived I sat in my car. Adrenaline hummed while the crowd of concerned onlookers began to dwindle as reassured glances exchanged and dissolved back into the cool night. I wept. A month earlier a friend of mine lost her life in the same freak accident way. Overworked, I hadn't processed much until that moment. My friend and I worked together in a group home. She was my supervisor and would drop by during the day to check-in. Inevitably we would chat about the state of the country and world and our desire for a greater change deeply rooted in love and safety for ALL beings. The second half of the song is an honoring of her and my conversations. After sharing the song with Birdie B. she helped me to round out the phrasing along with a few word choices. I deeply appreciate her, Todd, and Jaron for their artistry and space Sparkle Bones Studio. Miss you P.

lyrics

I thought about you yesterday
Where on the pavement there you laid
Pulled the car over to see if you were ok
A crowd gathered around your body
We all wondered how badly you broke
You lifted your head and said
I haven’t seen you much round the maze

Half of the time were elsewhere
The other half asleep
Take a look at your life and hold on to what you feel makes it complete

Thought about the wars today
Over love of another ones power
Over land over money over god
We’re over it

Half of the time we have hope
The other half were hopeless
When do we question the madness
When do we take to the streets

I know you’re over it
I’m over it too
We’re over it
So let’s see it through

And, I haven’t seen you much around the maze
